Single mum with aggressive form of cancer receives $15,000 for dream trip to New York

Yvonne Johansen has an 11-year-old son and no other family, so Seven Sharp and ASB surprised her with a life-changing gift.

ASB’s Good as Gold recipient is Yvonne, who works at the Greenlane Clinical Centre in Auckland and is battling cancer.

Yvonne became a single mother to son Chris after her husband died “some time ago”.

Earlier this year, Yvonne was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and has been given little time to live.

“There’s been days where she hasn’t actually been able to drive to work, where she’s had to go and have chemo, go and have treatment or something and she’s actually had to catch the bus, but she will always turn up and she’ll see her patients,” says Yvonne’s co-worker Rochelle, who nominated her for the prize.

Yvonne has received $15,000 as part of the ASB Good as Gold segment on Seven Sharp.

Yvonne has always wanted to jet off to New York with her son, and now that dream is in reach.

“There are people with my cancer who’ve died after a few months, but the longest survivor is 29 years, so I’ve decided I’m going to be one of those survivors.

“My son needs me, and he is my world, so I refuse to leave him. I’m not going to leave him,” says Yvonne.
