Almost 18,000 people want the private sale of fireworks to be banned, a move Green MP Gareth Hughes says would ensure the public could enjoy displays "without the worries and danger of ad hoc private use".
"Fireworks cause hundreds of accidents each year, start fires and cause distress and sometimes injuries to animals," he said.
"It's no surprise, with the many stories of injury and trauma I hear, that New Zealanders are calling time for private sales of fireworks to fizzle out."
The petition had 17942 signatures, and was created by Chris Eichbaum on November 1.
"Accidents involving fireworks result in injuries to many, and to young people disproportionately," the petition states.
"Domestic animals are often traumatised by fireworks and their retail sale is opposed by the NZ Veterinary Association that has repeatedly called for a ban.
Numerous animals are stressed every year and many are injured, SPCA chief executive Andrea Midgen says.
The petition also calls for public displays to be managed by licensed providers and to be approved through a local authority.
Fireworks are available for retail sale from November 2 to November 5, to people aged 18 and over.
