Should kids who aren't vaccinated be banned from going to school in New Zealand?

The Breakfast crew weighed into the tricky topic as a measles outbreak hits Canterbury

Breakfast host Hayley Holt says children whose parents don’t get them vaccinated should be prevented from attending school, as scaring them into action is easier than educating them.

Canterbury is in the midst of measles outbreak, with close to 30 people having contracted the virus.

In Italy, vaccinations are compulsory for children if they want to attend state schools.

With a measles outbreak in Christchurch we spoke with the psychologist.

Breakfast co-host Jack Tame was against the move, despite feeling slightly uneasy given there is a new addition to his family.

“Although this measles outbreak is really concerning, I don’t know we have the same levels of people who aren’t vaccinating their children as say Italy.

“That being said, it’s been really interesting over the last week or so, I’ve got a new nephew, eight weeks old, and he’s too young to be vaccinated against measles at the moment.”

Daniel Faitaua, who has three sons, said they were vaccinated, and it was up to parents to make that decision.

Hayley was blunter in her appraisal.

“I’m going to be the only one who says yes, just because I feel like scaring someone into doing this is going to be easier than educating them.”
