Police were called to the scene on Brown Street, in Strathern, where they located an injured man about 7.40pm, Southland Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman said in a statement.

The man has since been transported to Southland Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The shooting was an isolated incident, Mr Bowman said.

The Armed Offenders Squad had responded to the incident and set up cordons.

A scene examination is underway and residents should expect a continued police presence in the area as they continue their investigation.

Anyone who may have noticed any suspicious behaviour or vehicles in the area at around 8pm yesterday has been urged to call 105.
