SH1 near Kaikoura blocked after crash between truck and ute

A section of State Highway 1 is blocked after a serious crash near Kaikoura this morning.

Emergency services were called at 9:30am after a truck and ute crashed on a stretch of road just north of the Clarence river. 

Rescue helicopters have airlifted one person in a critical condition to Wellington Hospital and another in a serious condition has been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital. 

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency New Zealand has told 1 NEWS that three helicopters in total have been dispatched.

The section between Clarence and Kaikoura remains closed and police are asking motorists to avoid the area.
