Severe weather watch forecast for eastern parts of central New Zealand as temperatures drop

February 24, 2019

MetService have issued a severe weather watch for eastern parts of central New Zealand today.

A severe weather warning is in place for Kaikōura Coast and Ranges where heavy rain is forecast along with strong gale southerlies and possible thunderstorms.

Marlborough and Tutira in Hawke's Bay are also in line for a battering and have been issued with a severe weather warning.

Localised downpours could top 35mm per hour which could cause flooding and slips.

Canterbury, Wairarapa, Gisborne and other areas of Hawke’s Bay may also be affected and MetService have issued a heavy rain watch for these areas.

It advises people in these areas to keep up to date with forecasts in case parts of the watch are upgraded to a full warning.

Rain is forecast for most of the country today with colder gusty southeasterlies and southerlies settling into many places, breaking the long wave of hot weather New Zealand has had.

MetService says conditions should ease by tomorrow.
