January 23, 2019

A 4.7 magnitude quake has struck north of Whanganui tonight. A seperate 6.0 quake initially reported by Geonet to have severely shaken Gisborne, however, turned out to be a "ghost quake" that didn't actually take place.

The 4.7 magnitude quake struck at 8.09pm and was reported as being felt by nearly 6000 people.

A Geonet spokesperson told 1 NEWS the 6.0 magnitude earthquake reported in Ruatoria was a ghost earthquake tied to a 5.5 magnitude earthquake near the Kermadec islands.
