MetService said gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour can be expected until midnight tonight.
Vector said pockets of the city from the south to the north are being affected.
Its chief networks officer, Andre Botha said places like Sandringham and Mount Albert have severe damage to the network.
He said about 40 crews are either working to repair power lines or on standby.
"Of course it just depends on the state of the damage, if we can repair it safely overnight it will be done and if we can't we will repair it first thing tomorrow morning," said Mr Botha.
He said residents should stay away from fallen lines or trees and get in contact with Vector instead.
