Eight people have been injured, with a child in critical condition, after a crash in South Auckland.

The accident was reported shortly before 11.30am.

Auckland's Westpac 2 chopper has flown the child to Starship Hospital from the scene of the crash, at Gun Club Road and Schlaepfer Road in Pukekohe.

Four of those injured are children, aged between 6 and 13.

Along with critically injured child, one child is in a serious condition and the other two are in a moderate condition.

Four adults are also being treated for moderate injuries.

Senior Sergeant Dave Readings says the Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene and the road remains closed with cordons in place.

"Initial inquiries indicate that some of the occupants from one of the vans were not restrained.

"This is a crucial reminder to all motorists to always wear your seatbelt when driving and ensure all passengers are also restrained before starting your journey," says Senior Sergeant Readings.
