Serco boss in NZ to address 'major issue' with how Mt Eden Prison is run

Serco's international chief executive Rupert Soames has admitted there's a "major issue" with the way the private prison contractor is running Mt Eden Prison.

The Department of Corrections is currently investigating Serco over a raft of issues related to its running of Mt Eden including organised fight clubs, prisoners' access to cellphones and inadequate reporting of prisoner violence.

"Clearly this is a major issue for Serco and Mt Eden prison and I want to make sure we are cooperating fully with the investigations and are making sure the people are getting the information they need", Mr Soames told media in Auckland today.

Mr Soames said he's come to Auckland "because I'm clearly very concerned about what I've heard".

Corrections have taken back the running of Mt Eden Prison after the issues around Serco surfaced late month.
