One person is dead and a section of State Highway 1 is closed after a car hit a pedestrian in Northland this evening.

Police are responding to the serious crash on State Highway 1 in Hikurangi, Whangārei.

The crash was reported around 6.40pm.

The road is closed and diversions are in place.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
