A second person has died as the result of a head-on crash between a rental car and a bus last week on a popular tourist route near Queenstown.

Police have not yet released the names of either man who died.

Eight others were injured on Thursday morning when the tourist bus and car crashed along State Highway 6 just outside Kingston. The roadway is used by people visiting Milford Sound.

Queenstown police said the driver of the rental car crossed the centre line, causing the crash. He was the first person who died.

Another person in the car was flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries.

The seven passengers on the bus, plus the driver, were treated at Lakes District Hospital in Frankton with moderate to minor injuries.

A car and bus collided near Queenstown this morning killing the driver of the car.

The crash came just two weeks after a car crashed into a bus on the Devils Staircase between Queenstown and Kingston, with the driver of that car also crossing the centre line.

Locals who use the road daily have told 1 NEWS safety there is always a concern for them.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said the road is a priority because of the number of tourists who use it, which is why it has invested in extra safety measures like new road barriers and rumble strips.

The cause of the latest crash remains under investigation by the Serious Crash Unit.
