Second NZDF aid flight to leave for Vanuatu amid volcano fears

October 6, 2017

Thousands of Ni-Vanuatu have been forced to flee their homes due to the threat of volcanic eruption.

A second New Zealand Defence Force flight will leave for Vanuatu today as evacuations continue over fears a volcano on one of the country's islands will blow.

More than 10,000 people have been evacuated from the island of Ambae after the Monaro volcano became unsettled earlier this week.

The government has ordered that all residents of the island be evacuated by today, and locals and volunteers have been working around the clock.

The NZDF flight today will carry supplies like hygiene kits and chemical toilets.

Many of those evacuated are now in temporary accommodation as the threat of volcanic eruption looms.

New Zealand has now contributed about $700,000 in aid.
