Second Cape Kidnappers slip nearly hit two people, local council says

February 7, 2019

A second large landslide took place at Cape Kidnappers near Hastings, the council says, nearly injuring two people.

The first landslide took place on Wednesday, January 23 on the beach near the gannet colony - a popular tourist attraction. Two tourists, a man and a woman, were injured .

Hastings District Council (HDC) said today in a statement today a second took place on Saturday, February 2, and possibly a third smaller one the next day.

During the February 2 event, two people were walking on the beach below, and narrowly avoided the rockslide - they were left "very shaken".

A geologist then inspected the site and warned there is still a lot of loose material present, and that further landslides are likely.

Son Jungho talked with 1 NEWS reporter Sean Hogan.

It was decided on Thursday last week that access will not be opened to the site until a geologist's report is completed - it is being done so with urgency.

"Public safety is a priority, and people are urged to heed the signs that have been placed at the beach and stay away from the area until further notice," HDC said.
