Search underway after father and son fail to return from seven day tramp in Te Urewera

A search is underway for a father and son after they failed to return from a seven day tramp in the Te Urewera area.

Police say they're searching for the pair along with LandSAR volunteers and a helicopter.

The middle aged father and his teenage son were due to exit the bush at Hopuruahine Landing at 5pm yesterday but never showed.

The shuttle driver who was due to pick up the pair waited at the meeting point overnight and contacted police this morning when they never arrived.

Police say they were well-equipped for the tramp, and the father is experienced.

Today's search will continue until dark.
