September 9, 2018

A search for a man who went missing from a boat in Southland today has been called off by police for the night.

Police say they were made aware around 2.30pm today that a three-metre alloy dinghy with three people on board had sunk in the Aparima River estuary in Riverton.

Two people made it to shore uninjured, but a third person is still unaccounted for.

A search involving Coastguard, Police Search and Rescue, LandSAR volunteers, and a helicopter was launched and was suspended just after 7pm.

Police say the search is expected to resume around first light tomorrow, which will coincide with low tide around 7am.
