School looking into Hamilton girls topless trail bike stunt which left another student injured

November 3, 2017

The principal of Waikato Diocesan School says she is looking into the topless trail bike stunt involving six of her students, which left a Hamilton Boys' High School student injured yesterday.

Six students from Hamilton's Waikato Diocesan School for Girls, rode tandem back-to-back on three trail bikes in their underwear through the grounds of Hamilton Boys' High School.

The trail bike escapade lasted for a number of laps of the school in the front playing fields, during which they ran over the leg of one male student, sending him to hospital.

The male student required numerous stitches.

Diocesan School principal Mary Curran told the NZ Herald the school wasn't able to comment on any potential punishment for the girls involved in the stunt as interviews are still taking place.

"This is the first step in an official process. The principal will then give her report to the boards and they will decide on the action that will be taken," Ms Curran told the NZ Herald.

Since the incident more end of school year activity has been reported, with a common room at the Diocesan School being vandalised and a group of boys being halted at the Diocesan gates dressed only in underwear, armed with eggs.

Hamilton Boys' High School Principal Susan Hassall said the trial bike incident was far more serious than some end of year prank.

"It is in my opinion a step more significant than a playful prank," Ms Hassall said.

"There was no regard for the safety of the students on the field.

"There was about 500 boys on the field and they rode trail bikes at excessive speed, hit one boy and left him injured, they didn't stop.

"It was an act that went well above the level of prank. They broke the law so the consequences should be significant."

In a statement, Waikato Police Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering said inquiries were being made into the incident, and they had no further comment to make at this time.
