A sad ending: Five of six remaining pygmy whales euthanised in Far North

The whales were moved from 90 Mile Beach to the east coast, where rescuers say they’ve got a better chance of survival.

Five of the six remaining pygmy whales have beached again in Northalnd and DOC experts have made the decision to euthanise them.

The last remaining pygmy whale from the original pod is being monitored.

The pod of around a dozen became stranded near Te Paki Stream at the northern end of 90 Mile Beach along a 5km stretch of sand three nights ago.

Also on the weekend, nearly 150 pilot whales stranded on Stewart Island. They all died, or were euthanised.
