Rot and mould at Middlemore Hospital to be fixed as part of $80m cash injection

November 21, 2018

Jacinda Ardern was at Middlemore Hospital to reveal the news.

Middlemore Hospital's rotting and mouldy buildings will be repaired after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced $80 million will be allocated to it and the Manukau SuperClinic.

In a statement, Ms Ardern said, "The people and staff of Counties Manukau District Health Board deserve quality facilities that are in a good state of repair".

"Problems with leaky buildings, including rot and mould in the walls, and earthquake prone facilities are all symptoms of years of neglect and underinvestment."

The Prime Minister said the cash investment "will make a real difference" to patients, their families and to "staff working at the frontline".

Health Minister David Clark said the move is part of an ongoing process to repair New Zealand's major medical facilities.

Mr Clark said the funding will help ensure the Counties Manuaku DHB can "plan with certainty and develop business cases for four important projects", including the re-cladding of the Kidz First building; relocating the radiology department from the Galbraith building to the Harley Grey building; establish a radiology hub at the Manukau SuperClinic; and carry out infrastructure work at the Manukau SuperClinic, including IT, medical gases and parking spaces.
