Roger the 'massive sweetheart' cat abandoned an exceptionally rare three times

October 6, 2017

It's been an unfortunate journey for Auckland rescue cat Roger, who was abandoned not once, but a rare three times in his short life.

SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen told 1 NEWS the now 10-year-old Persian first arrived when he was four, after being abandoned by his family when they moved and left him behind.

"This is something we see far too often at the SPCA, but Roger's case is exceptional," Ms Midgen said.

"We think this is the most times a single cat has been abandoned and brought to the SPCA."

An SPCA spokesperson said it's not an attitude problem, Roger has a "super chill, super smoochy and super lovely" personality.

"Nobody here can understand why anyone would move home and leave Roger behind – he is a massive sweetheart."

Roger was luckily rehomed, but just three years later in 2014 he was on the streets again, and arrived back at the SPCA.

He went through the processes, found a new home, but just last month the now senior-aged Roger was back.

"To be left behind again as a senior is really awful," the spokesperson said, with all three times the owners moving away.

Ms Midgen said when Roger last arrived he had to be shaved because his long hair had become matted as he wasn't cared for properly.

"Our hospital team removed an entire kilo of matted fur from Roger, and kept him warm in a red sweater after," she said.

But it's all looking up for Roger now. He only had to wait a day for his new family to walk through the doors of the SPCA.

He's been adopted by Rachael Longson and her family in Glendowie, who welcomed Roger into their home two-weeks-ago.

"We couldn't have asked for a better forever home for him," Ms Midgen said.

Ms Longson said Roger has settled in and is getting to know the other animals, with a particular affection for the dogs of the house.

Roger "loves everyone he meets", she said, and his shaven body currently makes him look like a Dr Seuss character.

She, like the SPCA, is perplexed why Roger has been abandoned so many times.

"I think it truly is bad luck," Ms Longson said.

"He's just a normal, cruisey, lovely little boy. I just don't get it."

Roger's journey is being documented on Instagram, follow him here .
