Road toll horror: Man dies following New Plymouth crash, sixth person to die in two days

A 22-year-old man has died after a car crashed into a wall in New Plymouth in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The man died yesterday afternoon after he - and the three other people in the car - were taken to Taranaki Base Hospital following the crash at 1.30am yesterday.

One person in the car is in hospital remains in a critical condition. The two remaining people are also still hospitalised, but with serious injuries.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.

The death brings the road toll across the country in the last two days to six after a person was killed in an accident in Morrinsville this morning following four fatalities on the roads yesterday.  

A fatal crash caused commuter chaos in the capital today.

One person died in a crash in Wellington's Terrace Tunnel, one in an accident on the East Coast, one near Waimauku in West Auckland and another near Lake Pūkaki in South Canterbury. 

Police are appealing for witnesses to the Waimauku crash, which took the life of a 64-year-old woman.
