Road closed, warnings in place for third day in a row after lower South Island hit with rare wintry blast

Multiple warnings have again been issued across the lower South Island following a rare wintry blast.

SH8 between Millers Flat and Roxburgh has been closed due to flooding, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said.

MetService has issued road snowfall warnings for SH1 Desert Road, SH7 Lewis Pass, SH73 Springfield to Arthurs Pass, SH73 Porters Pass, SH8 Lindis Pass, Crown Range Road and SH94 Te Anau to Milford.

Snow chains are required on SH73 Springfield to Arthurs Pass and SH94 Te Anau to Milford due to snow.

A heavy snow watch is in place for the Canterbury High Country, eastern parts of Fiordland and inland Dunedin. 

Strong wind warnings are also in place for SH1 Dunedin to Gore, SH8 Raes Junction to Milton, and SH90 Raes Junction to McNab.

A strong wind watch is in place for eastern Otago, especially near the coast, with south to southeasterly winds potentially approaching severe gales at times.
