Review: Pink rocked Dunedin, leaving South Island fans envious of Auckland's six gigs

Seven Sharp’s Julian Lee gets into the spirit.

1 NEWS reporter John McKenzie was at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium last night as Pink performed her first of what will be seven New Zealand concerts over the next week and a half. Here's his review.

When Pink told the packed stadium last night that it was "the most people I've ever seen in my life", I somehow doubted it. But I also, for some reason, really didn't care.

Every word, every note, every acrobatic move proved what most people in the audience already knew: that Pink is a true rock star. The close to 40,000 fans who descended on Dunedin had a night they likely won’t forget for many years to come.

There were no signs of the illness that forced her to miss four shows in Australia, although judging by the acrobatic moves she performed during several songs, it’s easy to see how one could become run down. How someone can maintain their voice while hanging upside down is beyond me.

She sung her usual anthems, but also chucked in the odd rock anthem - and I’m talking Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit kind of anthems. She opened with Let’s Get the Party Started before moving on to my personal favourite of the night, Raise Your Glass (although many songs could have grabbed this spot).

Adding to the electric atmosphere, Pink seemed to genuinely enjoy Dunedin. She detailed her trip to the local farmers market while mentioning some of the friendliest people she’s ever met - not to mention the great coffee.

The stadium itself also delivered. With the days of poor sound quality now a distant memory, this is a world-class venue that’ll continue to attract top-class talent.

The only question I have is this: Why did she only perform one show down south and give six to the north?

If you went, I know you had a night to remember. If you missed out, don’t let it happen again.
