Retired friends create special bush track to almost forgotten Catlins waterfall

The pair knew Koropuku Falls existed, so they decided others needed to see its beauty.

Shrouded by thick bush, Korupuku Falls is truly one of the Catlins' hidden gems.

About 20 minutes south of Papatowai - a waterfall once almost forgotten - until two longtime friends came up with a plan.

Wayne Allen and Peter Hill knew it existed so they decided others needed to see its beauty. Any spare time they had was spent with their tools, chopping and trimming back branches and laying close to 2000 punga logs.

With approval from the Department of Conservation the pair transformed the overgrown forest into a 40 minute, single lane rugged trail. The project took 15 years to complete.

From now on there's just a bit of maintenance to do - no job too tough for a pair of retirees who just can't seem to sit still.
