Residents cleaning up after tornadoes hit two North Island areas yesterday

August 21, 2018

In New Plymouth, 11 homes lost their roofs and 20 houses were assessed for minor damage.

Residents are in clean-up mode in two regions after two separate tornadoes struck yesterday.

At least six properties were damaged when a tornado formed at Ohope near Whakatāne in the Bay of Plenty about 5.30pm.

The resident said he watched the spout travel across the sea, sucking up water for about five minutes.

Roofs were torn off of homes, windows were smashed and power lines were brought down by the force of the wind, but there were no reports of any injuries.

An Ohope resident watched the scene unfold this afternoon.

About the same time, a tornado also struck in New Plymouth on Belt Road, where houses, power lines and trees were damaged.

Eleven homes lost their roofs, and 20 homes suffered minor damage.

Witness captured video of both of the tornadoes.

MetService is forecasting continued stormy weather for some parts of the country today.
