Rehoming of sex offenders 'needs to be a hell of a lot better', says anxious Palmerston North community

Corrections says it is reviewing its re-homing procedures, but the community of Roslyn wants further steps.

A small community near Palmerston North is calling for more thought and care to be put into where sex offenders are re-homed, once they're released from prison.

Corrections says it is reviewing it procedures, but the community of Roslyn wants further steps taken.

At another community meeting after a child sex offender was moved into their area in Manawatu, the feeling is one of anxiety.

"If they're going to release information out to communities it needs to be a hell of a lot better done," one local says.

The Wairarapa/Manawatu area is home to 37 child sex offenders.

In total there are 522 around the country.

Corrections is carrying out a review of the management of accommodation and community notification for all offenders placed in the community.

The report and review is expected to be released over the next two months.

But this community wants to see further action, gathering a petition they intend to take to Parliament.

It includes having a publicly available sex offender register, preventative detention for pedophiles and they want government to look at more purpose built houses for offenders on prison grounds.
