Raw video shows Auckland driver passed by stolen ute travelling wrong way down busy motorway

October 16, 2017

Hair-raising footage of a stolen ute speeding the wrong way down a busy peak-hour Auckland motorway has been captured by a stunned motorist he narrowly missed this afternoon.

The allegedly stolen red ute was being pursued by the police Eagle helicopter while careening down the emergency inside stopping lane of State Highway 20A.

The pursued vehicle was brought to a halt by police road spikes in Onehunga, but not before it left motorist Kevin Parsons shaken after it passed him while going the wrong way at Mangere Bridge.

Mr Parsons provided the video to 1 NEWS.

Police have confirmed the driver was a man in his 20s, who has been taken into custody after allegedly attempting to flee the vehicle after it was stopped in Onehunga.

The vehicle was first spotted by the Eagle helicopter in Glen Eden this afternoon, police said.

Police have not yet released any information about potential charges.
