November 8, 2017

Parts of the South Island received up to 20cm of snow overnight – with the official start of summer just under a month away.

An unseasonable dump of snow has created some stunning landscapes in the deep south, including this vista from near Queenstown.

This video was captured by a 1 NEWS cameraman this morning, after an unseasonal snow dump, just a few weeks out from the official start of summer.

It's November, but summer seems a long way off.

Further south, in Arrowtown, residents woke up to a winter wonderland.

Widespread snowfall was also recorded across Southland, Otago, Canterbury, Fiordland and parts of Westland and Marlborough overnight.

The snowfall accompanied a deep low which passed over the south last night, and is still bringing rain to parts of Canterbury and Otago this morning.
