Prisoner rushed to hospital after alleged assault at Auckland Prison

A new maximum security wing has opened at Auckland Prison at Paremoremo, which will house up to 260 inmates.

A prisoner has been rushed to hospital after an alleged assault at Auckland Prison this afternoon.

A Corrections spokesperson told 1 NEWS police have secured the area where the incident took place at the prison in Paremoremo and are treating it as a crime scene.

They confirmed the prisoner taken to hospital is not the man charged over the Christchurch terrorist attack.

Prison Director Andy Langley says Corrections will also carry out a full investigation.
