Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's engagement to Clarke Gayford makes headlines around the world

May 3, 2019

The pair met in 2012, the Prime Minister had made it clear, she was not going to propose.

The announcement of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's engagement to long-term partner Clarke Gayford is making headlines around the world.

From across the globe, news agencies published the news of the impending marriage which was confirmed by the couple yesterday.

The pair have a baby daughter - Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford - who was born last year.

They were engaged over Easter weekend at Mahia.

It was when the Prime Minister was spotted wearing a diamond ring that suspicion was raised - but not on the usual finger because of a minor skin condition.

The proposal follows an international interview last year when she made it very clear she would not be the one popping the question herself.

The new-born was on her best behaviour while her parents expressed their gratitude for the messages of support.

The pair reportedly first met in 2012 after an awards event. Mr Gayford then writing to Ms Ardern over concerns he had about a controversial Government Amendment Bill.

They met for coffee, but since then Jacinda Ardern has gone on to become Prime Minister and then a mother. Clarke Gayford taking on the role as a stay-at-home dad.

The PM eventually said it was "pretty special" holding baby Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford for the first time.

The announcement has caused a flurry online, congratulations coming from all corners of the world.

There's no news of a wedding date yet, but Auckland Mayor, Phil Goff,  has given his suggestion...

The PM’s partner has praised her handling of the Christchurch mosque killings.

To have baby Neve as a flower girl.
