Paddles Ardern-Gayford has been hit by a car and killed 

The cat owned by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and partner Clarke Gayford died yesterday, according to the PM's spokesperson. 

Paddles was much loved, and not just by us. Thanks for everyone's thoughts. And on behalf of Paddles, please be kind to the SPCA. They found her before we did, and we will always be grateful for that

Ms Ardern has paid tribute to Paddles on Instagram. 

"To anyone who has ever lost a pet, you'll know how sad we feel."

"Paddles was much loved, and not just by us. Thanks for everyone's thoughts. And on behalf of Paddles, please be kind to the SPCA. They found her before we did, and we will always be grateful for that," Ms Ardern wrote. 

Paddles shot to international fame after having a Twitter account dedicated to the cat, with outlets like BBC reporting on the feline. 

Paddles also played a leading role in Ms Ardern's phone call with US President Donald Trump.
