'It was pretty horrific' - man saw woman being stabbed in central Auckland, gave her first aid

November 23, 2018

A man is helping police with their inquiries after the Anzac Ave incident.

A man who gave first aid to a woman who was stabbed yesterday has told of his experience as the 18-year-old accused of carrying out the attack appears in court this morning.

The stabbing took place about 2.45pm yesterday on Anzac Ave in central Auckland, and witness Steve Smith told the NZ Herald he and a colleague heard loud screams and saw a man repeatedly lunging at the woman with a knife.

"We both ran towards him and he saw us, dropped the knife and ran down Anzac Ave," Mr Smith said.

"My co-worker tried to follow him and I tried to assist with first aid because I'm a senior first-aider ... being the first responder I assessed the patient and there were multiple stab wounds.

"We were trying to stop the bleeding, make sure she's OK and keep assuring her, even if she is unconscious she might hear us ... it was pretty horrific."

The 18-year-old male accused of attempted murder will appear in Auckland District Court this morning.

Police say the accused and the victim know each other, and said there was no ongoing threat to the public.

The scene was yesterday cordoned off by police for an examination, where blood was visible on the ground as well as a used first aid kit and a handbag.

The victim is in a serious, but stable condition in Auckland Hospital.
