Power has been completely restored to Kaitaia households

Top Energy has confirmed that the power has been completely restored in Kaitaia after 32,000 households and businesses went without for about 12 hours today.

A broken pole is still causing power problems for Frenchman's Swamp, Parekura Bay, Paroa Bay, Te Unga Bay, Orokawa Bay, Rawhiti and Taupiri Bay.

Top Energy said they are working to fix this by about 9pm tonight.

Police have confirmed they are investigating damage caused to three transmission towers in Northland that saw power cut to thousands of households.

The Taipa area in Northland received power supplied by generators at the Taipa substation while Transpower worked to restore power in the Far North District.

Residents were told power in Taipa was to be used  "sparingly" and for essential use only, with locals being warned excessive use could trigger another outage due to demand placing pressure on the network.

Transpower say the cause of the fault has been identified as glass insulators being damaged on three transmission towers. The cause of the damage was suspected to be malicious.

Bullet casings were found today at the base of the towers, Transpower say.

Northland Police are investigating.
