A proposal to change Poverty Bay's name to a dual name has reportedly been confirmed by The New Zealand Geographical Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa.
Under the change the East Coast area would be known by the dual nameTūranganui a Kiwa/Poverty Bay, the Gisborne Herald reports
Over 600 submissions were made regarding the proposal between May and August before the board accepted the dual name proposal made by the Gisborne District Council.
The area was named Poverty Bay by Captain James Cook when he landed there in 1769 and was unable to re-stock his ship while Tūranganui a Kiwa means "the great or long-standing place of Kiwa".
The board will now submit a prepared report to Land Information Minister Eugenie Sage.
Ms Sage will then make a final decision on the matter.
