Porn easy for teens to access and it's informing their views about sex - report finds

Pornography is easy to access for young New Zealanders and it's informing their view about sex with some feeling reliant it, a new report has found.

The New Zealand Youth and Porn research report was released today, which surveyed more than 2000 New Zealanders aged between 14-17.

Chief Censor David Shanks said it was vital to put young people "front and centre" on the debate around internet porn.

"This research presents both a challenge and an opportunity. A challenge, because it puts beyond doubt porn is now a fact of life for young New Zealanders.

"They sometimes see violent, aggressive, misogynistic and coercive behaviour."

"An opportunity, because many young NZ’ers have told us they think about what they see, are aware that much of it is not for them, and they are up for having some limits."

It found issues around the ease of access to porn and that it could inform young people's view around sex.

"Young people are learning about sex from porn, and it’s influencing their sexual behaviour," the report said.

"Some young people feel reliant on porn, and many regular viewers would like to look at porn less often."

The report recommended regulation and education to inform young people on sex and sexuality.
