Police have surrounded the Head Hunters' West Auckland headquarters after a reported shooting in New Lynn left one person with critical injuries.

Police were notified at about 3:20pm of reports of a physical altercation between a group of people at an Astley Avenue address in New Lynn. 1News understands the incident is gang-related.

Police say a firearm is believed to have been discharged during the incident and one person was critically injured. They were transported to hospital by ambulance.

A Henderson address has been cordoned off in relation to this incident and the Armed Offenders Squad has been deployed.

Armed police surrounded the Head Hunters’ headquarters.

It comes after a man died shortly after being dropped off at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital on Saturday night with "critical injuries".

Police said in a statement he was taken to hospital in a private vehicle just before 8.30pm and died soon afterwards.

Police have the vehicle he was transported in and it's being examined.

They say the man may have been with others in Māngere just before 7pm.

"There will be a police presence in Māngere today as investigators speak with people who may have witnessed anything of significance to the inquiry."

A manager at the Oakwood Manor Motor Lodge said a fight took place outside the property last night. It didn't involve guests.

Police say there is nothing to suggest the Māngere and New Lynn incidents are connected at this stage.
