While the bodies have not yet been formally identified, police believe they are Raymond and James Fleet, an uncle and nephew.

The two men were reported missing by their family on Wednesday last week, August 9, having not been seen or heard from since the previous afternoon.

Rotorua Area Commander Inspector Anaru Pewhairangi said a scene examination is ongoing in the Mamaku Forest today and a post mortem is expected to take place tomorrow.

"Until that post mortem is completed we are not able to provide any information regarding how the two men died or whether we are seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths," he told media at Rotorua Police Station.

"I can however assure the public that police are doing everything we can to provide answers to the whanua and the wider community."

Mr Pewhairangi also said a team of experienced officers will "work tirelessly to bring whoever is responsible for these deaths to account".

"This type of incident is rare in Rotorua and I expect the news will come as a shock to our community."

He expressed his condolences to the family "as they come to terms with the shocking and tragic loss of two of their whanau".

"I have visited them this morning and police are offering them the support they need at this time, including the application of tuku wairua which is the release of the spirit of their loved ones. But you can also appreciate they are a family who are devastated at this time," Mr Pewhairangi said.

Mr Pewhairangi  said he would like to think this is an isolated incident but if the community has concerns they should call the police.
