Police have praised the crowd at this evening’s Rugby League World Cup 2017 quarter final between Tonga and Lebanon at Christchurch's AMI Stadium, saying there were no incidents of concern and no arrests.

The heavy favourites Tonga advance through to the RLWC semi-finals next week after edging Lebanon 24-22.

Police evicted one person for intoxication, but the level of alcohol consumption was low, said Canterbury District Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd.

"It’s been really good. The crowd was really well behaved with no issues with alcohol," Mr Todd said.

Forward commander at the ground, Senior Sergeant Matt Emery, said the vocal and vibrant crowd created a great atmosphere.

"We had no issues whatsoever.  The crowd was awesome," he said.

Mr Emery said police would continue to keep a strong presence in the central city throughout the evening.

In  South Auckland, Tonga fans celebrated in the main street of Otahuhu and police reported no issues there either.

Tonga will face the winner out of England and Papua New Guinea at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland next Saturday.
