Police have issued a road safety warning after a Nelson crash this morning left one woman dead and three others in hospital with serious injuries.

This afternoon police confirmed that the woman who died in the Stoke crash in the early hours of this morning was a 25-year-old woman from the West Coast.

The vehicle she was travelling in lost control and went off the road.

Police say that during the crash the vehicle has rolled and three passengers in the car have been thrown from the vehicle.

The woman who died was a passenger in the vehicle and the driver and two other passengers are in hospital with serious injuries.

Inspector Paul Borrell, Area Commander Nelson Bays Area, says any death on our roads is one too many and has given a message on road safety over the busy holiday period.

"Police are committed to reducing death and injury on our roads but we cannot do it alone, we need everyone’s help to keep our roads safe.

"We know there are four main behaviours which contribute to death and injury on our roads; people driving too fast for the conditions, driving while impaired (by alcohol, drugs, or fatigue), driving while distracted – including using a cell phone – and not being properly restrained.

"We want to remind everybody on the roads these holidays to be patient and make a concerted effort to keep each other safe.

"Imagine the person in the car in front of you or coming round the corner contains your whānau or friends.

"Let’s all ensure that when we’re in our cars we respect each other and each other’s right to get where we’re going safely," Inspector Borrell says.
