Emergency services are at the scene after a person died at Castle Rock on the Coromandel Peninsula this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Whitianga  shortly before 10.30am, police said in a statement this afternoon.

Inquiries are ongoing to understand the circumstances of the sudden death which is being treated as unexplained, police said.

No further details are available at this time, they said.

Castle Rock is a 525-metre-high mountain.

In June a man's body was found at the bottom of the rock several days after his family said he slipped and fell while trying to meditate.

The coroner is investigating the cause of his death.
