The pair fled on foot at about 4.45pm after the hold-up near the ASB on Dominion Road, Mount Roskill.
Police say it's understood both offenders were carrying firearms at the time of the incident, though no shots were fired and no one was injured.
A number of people were shaken, however, and are receiving ongoing support, police said in a statement tonight.
Police said they do not believe this was a random robbery.
The offenders are still outstanding and a full investigation is underway to apprehend them, police said.
Officers are continuing to interview a large number of witnesses who were at the scene, but at this stage a description of the offenders is not available.
Cordons on Dominion Road have been stood down.
Earlier Manager of Yong Fa restaurant Cathy Wang said at least five police cars were at the scene of the robbery.
She said she saw two young men run from the bank about seven to 10 minutes before police arrived.
"I feel so shocked. It happened so fast," she said.
She said the men parked in a Mitsubishi car before they went inside the bank. Then when they ran out of the bank they left the vehicle there.
Stewart Hintz was in his car parked outside or near the bank and said "everyone was standing around shocked" when it happened.
He said he got out of his car and "all hell broke loose with armed police waving guns around".
