A police officer was badly injured in the November 25 incident.

Police have released more details about the shooting incident in Darfield, Canterbury, which left one person dead and an officer injured on Sunday.

The Bangor Road scene examination, where 56-year-old man Donald Ineson died, has now been completed and reopened to traffic.

Police say they fired one or more shots after "the deceased's vehicle had just been driven at officers hitting and seriously injuring one of them".

The shots entered the rear of Mr Ineson's vehicle.

Police say that preliminary findings from the post mortem indicate that a small fragment from a bullet has struck the man in the back.

The officer injured in the incident remains in hospital and his recovery is continuing.

The police investigation into the incident is ongoing as is the independent investigation by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
