Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has paid tribute to the 257 people killed in the Mt Erebus air disaster, having approved a multi-million dollar memorial.
With next year marking 40 years since the disaster, the government are committing $3 million to build the memorial, seeking expressions of interest from designers.
Ms Ardern said that the victims' families will be given input into the construction and design of the memorial.
"The memorial was something that families asked for," she said.
"We're making sure that in the construction of that memorial, we're really taking on board their views as to what will be the most fitting memorial for their family and their loved ones."
The Prime Minister will meet with members of the victims' families later this month.
