A memorial plaque to commemorate those who died in the 1918 influenza pandemic has been unveiled in Wellington.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern unveiled the plaque today.

It's estimated 9000 New Zealanders died during the global outbreak.

In a matter of months the disease claimed half as many Kiwi lives as the entire First World War did.
