'Pink crusader' hailed as local hero after chasing down alleged robber in fishnet stockings, fairy wings

Liam Fontaine says he reacted with "natural instincts" when he pursued the man on foot.

Police are praising an unlikely hero who pursued an alleged dairy robber on foot in Napier while wearing fairy wings and bunny ears.

Liam Fontaine says he reacted with "natural instinct" when he pursued the man dressed in fishnet stockings, a miniskirt and other magical accessories.

"I've been called pink fairy pink crusader tinkerbell, all sorts," Liam says.

The landscaper by day has captured the nation's attention after his sister spotted a man fleeing this Napier dairy yesterday.

The CCTV footage shows Liam make chase with 14-year-old side-kick Michael McGeorge in tow.

"No he wasn't very quick aye?" Liam said.

"No he was wearing like these really big boots," side-kick Michael said.

The pair tackled the alleged offender to the ground before an off-duty police officer stepped in.

"The amount of people that are around it could have been a lot different and a lot more serious had these guys not sort of taken the action that they did so yeah they did very well," Napier police constable Hannah O'Leary said.

The diary owner too, is thankful.

"It's really warm to have two people at the moment. I'm feeling so lucky and so happy for that," the owner said.

Liam was in the pink costume to help raise awareness of breast cancer, by taking part in a charity walk.

The chase is a deed his Mum would have been proud of.

But for the alleged offender things aren't so rosy.

"No one was harmed and we all get a good laugh out of it he's not going to have much of a much street cred when he gets to jail and he's there because he got caught by a fairy," Constable O'Leary said.
