Physiotherapist board say large spike in number of complaints is actually a good thing

Jeanette Woltman-Black says the industry has done a lot of work in past years on improving the ways people can raise issues.

The Chief Executive of the Physiotherapy Board says a spike in complaints - from nine in 2012 to 75 in the past twelve months - show that more people are willing and able to speak up.

Jeanette Woltman-Black, speaking this morning to TVNZ 1's Breakfast programme, said the increase was actually a good thing, despite looking like it might be "physios gone wild".

"We have made it easier for people to speak up," she said.

"We've done a lot of work with our systems and our processes ... things like you can lodge a complaint on our website, for example."

Ms Woltman-Black said the complaints revolved around many things, such as sexual contact, emotional boundaries, the treatment provided to someone or the effectiveness of that treatment.

She said there has also been somewhat of an attitude shift, with people feeling more empowered and confident when making complaints.

"I think the public are more willing to speak up which is a really good thing - we want people to speak up, we want patients and members of the public to come forward and say they are not happy and that they've got a concern and a complaint," she said.
