Phil Twyford admits 'at this moment' KiwiBuild will fall 700 homes short of first year target

The Housing Minister admitted the 1000 homes target by July is now unlikely.

Housing Minister Phil Twyford has admitted that "at this moment" KiwiBuild will fall 700 homes short of its first year target of 1000 homes.

National MP Judith Collins says the number of KiwiBuild homes that have been contracted to be completed by the Government's July deadline currently sits at 278.

Mr Twyford's figures aren't far off.

"Well, it’s closer to 300 now. It's about 300, but we're working as hard as we can to push those numbers up and get young families into affordable KiwiBuild homes," he told 1 NEWS.

The Housing Minister says he is disappointed the target won’t be met.

When asked if that was the final number of homes that will be built by July, Mr Twyford said, "at this moment that's what we have got contracted to be completed at the end of the financial year".

He says it's disappointing that the current figure falls 700 homes short of the Government's 1000 home target for KiwiBuild's first year.

"It’s been tougher than expected, but we're determined to turn this around and get these homes built," he said.
