One person is dead after what police describe as a "water-related incident" at a beach at Whakatāne today.
The person was pulled from the water at Whakatāne Heads just after 2pm in a critical condition, police say.
They were given medical attention, but died at the scene.
Two ambulances and a helicopter were sent to the scene, a St John spokesperson confirmed to 1 NEWS.
