Over 4000 people report feeling shallow 5.2 magnitude earthquake in central North Island

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake has rattled central North Island residents when it struck near Turangi this evening.

According to GeoNet, the quake struck at 7.02pm, 15 kilometres north east of Turangi in the Lake Taupō region.

The quake struck at a depth of 5 kilometres and was recorded as causing moderate shaking.

Over 4000 people have so far reported feeling the earthquake, which was followed by a mgnitude 4.5 quake in the same region only two minutes later.
