Power fully restored to over 16,000 Taupō homes after equipment failure causes outage

November 19, 2018

Power company Unison says power has been fully restored to over 16,000 Taupō homes after equipment failure caused an outage.

It made the statement in a Facebook post at about 7.30pm this evening, thanking people for their patience.

Unison earlier posted that it had received an update from Transpower that repair work was still being carried out on the Wairakei substation.

A Transpower fault earlier caused power to be cut to approximately 16,000 people in the Taupō region, with residents advised to expect it to remain down for some time.

"Today's outage in the Taupō region has been caused by the failure of a piece of equipment in our Wairekei substation," Transpower said.

"Our crews are currently working as fast as they are safely able to restore power to the area. We apologise for the continued inconvenience and will update this page as we have more information, including estimated restoration times.”

Transpower's Alison Andrew said there wasn't an explosion in the substation, but a large amount of heat and noise as the system failed.

No-one was injured.

It was hoped they will have their systems restored by mid-afternoon, and it would then be up to Unison to get the power back on for its customers.

Power company Unison  earlier posted an apology on their Facebook page and say they are doing all they can to restore the power as soon as possible.

Council asked residents to conserve water as pumps were running on generator power.

Further updates will be provided on Transpower's Facebook page.
